Wilfrid: A saint and his mission

On July 9th, Dr Catherine Cubitt, senior lecturer in
early Medieval History at the University of York,
presented us with a fascinating account of the life
of St Wilfrid...
In her talk, she focussed on key episodes in
Wilfrid's life and career, including his decisive
role at the Synod of Whitby as an advocate of the
Roman party, and his subsequent elevation to the
Bishopric of York. Perhaps one of the most
interesting revelations concerned the possibility
that Wilfrid may actually have died in 710, rather
than the more commonly accepted date of 709. If this
proves to be the case, then we will simply have to
extend our Wilfrid 1300 festival for another year!
