Religion and Popular Culture

Ripon Cathedral was once again host to a fascinating
and entertaining lecture in the St Wilfrid lecture
series...
Revd Dr David Wilkinson, principal of St John's
College, Durham, argued passionately and convincingly
that mission should be more about relevance than
defence, more about building bridges than trying to
win arguments. If there was a lesson to be taken from
the account of Paul in Athens, it was that we should
listen to and learn from popular culture, and make
imaginative connections. Indeed, the church needs to
stimulate the imagination - after all, what did Jesus
himself do but teach in stories and metaphors? He
cited many of his own favourite pop culture
references, notably the Simpsons and Star Wars, to
show some of the different ways in which religion and
culture can interact, and then challenged the
audience to think about how we - as individuals -
could build bridges between our faith and the culture
in which we live.
